His main interest is in fixing blockages inside coronary arteries without the need for coronary artery bypass surgery. He believes most blockages can be successfully opened using the technique of angioplasty and stenting. He has performed hundreds of procedures involving not only one artery but also three vessel or left main coronary artery disease.
Dr. Shahab is also experienced in putting stents in the carotid artery to prevent strokes in patients who have blockages in that important artery. Presently the only treatment for carotid artery disease is surgery. Dr. Shahab has presented the results of carotid artery stenting from more than 300 patients at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology. “Carotid Stenting will be the procedure of choice for carotid artery disease to prevent stroke in the near future.” says Dr. Shahab.

Dr. Shahab graduated from Dow Medical College University of Karachi, Pakistan and then came to the United States for further training in cardiovascular diseases. He did his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He was awarded the Outstanding Resident of the year Award at Michigan and was offered the position of Chief Medical Resident. His cardiology fellowship training was at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was then selected to be on the faculty at the University of Kentucky. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and American College of Physician (FACP). He is also a member of the American Medical Association and American Federation of Clinical Research. Dr. Shahab was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association in Kentucky and he is Chairman and Founding Member of the Kentucky Health Educational Campaign. In Kentucky he started the School Health Educational Program and he was the Program Director of the International Symposium on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke, entitled: “A Preventive Approach.”
